Real Bread Festival

Went to old spitalfields market to see the festival which was not very inspiring :-(

Spotted the famous Mr Whitley but failed to meet atty of BBA

Bakeries present included:

Karaway bakery
Aston's organic bakery
Flour power city

Interesting to follow the creation of
viviane's artisan bakery

No one seemed to be selling very well - not surprising when surrounded by tourist orientated gifts.

Interesting project linked to the refugee council providing baking workshops for women - one question that came to mind is whether the women are asked to share to existing knowledge of bread making from their own countries...?

At least I
bought the calendar from the
cafe art project http://www.cafeart.org.uk

best bread books

these are the best books that I have read relating to baking bread

bread matters -by- andrew whitley

this book not only contains a wide range of interesting recipes (mostly using sourdough/wild yeast starter) but also highlights the negative impact of mass produced or industrial bread (the use of unnamed/explained additives, the impact of bakers yeast on digestion and much more)

particularly good recipes:
caraway and rye (Russian style)

the tassajara bread book -by- edward espe brown

a wonderfully spiritual approach to bread and baking
helps you to appreciate how the energy flows from your hands into the dough (and from there into others...)

particularly good recipes:

english bread and yeast cookery -by- elizabeth david

the first book i read about making bread
her simple directions are an excellent starting point

particularly good recipes:

the links above are to amazon.co.uk (and if you buy anything having followed my link i will earn a few pennies ~thanks)
